Architectural visualization involves a wide range of technical terms, from rendering engines and lighting to materials, camera settings, and post-production. Understanding this terminology makes it easier for architects, designers, developers, and clients to communicate clearly with 3D visualization teams. 1. Core rendering concepts

Architectural visualization (archviz) The practice of producing accurate 3D images, animations, and interactive media of a building or space before it is built or of an existing space being repositioned. It is used to sell, to secure approvals, and to raise capital. True architectural visualization is built from a real 3D model of the actual project, which is what makes it dimensionally accurate, consistent across a whole set, and reusable for animation, tours, and floor plans. 3D rendering The process of generating a 2D image from a 3D scene by simulating how light, materials, and cameras behave. In architecture, rendering turns technical drawings and BIM models into lifelike visuals complete with accurate materials, lighting, shadows, and surrounding context.

CGI (computer-generated imagery) An umbrella term for any imagery created with computer graphics rather than a camera. In an architectural context, CGI and 3D rendering are used almost interchangeably, though “CGI” is more common when the image composites a rendered building into a real photographic background.

Photorealistic rendering A rendered image built to read as a real photograph, through lighting used deliberately, materials handled with care, and modeling built to the standard the audience already expects. Flat, uniform lighting and generic library furniture are the usual tells that mark an image as a placeholder rather than a convincing one.

Conceptual rendering (concept rendering) An early, exploratory image used to test ideas and direction, where a high level of detail is not the point. It is useful for brainstorming before a design is resolved and it is one of the few places where AI tools genuinely help, because precise accuracy is not yet required. It is not a substitute for a photoreal image built from the real model, which is what a buyer or an approval board needs to see.

Render engine (renderer) The software that performs the actual light-and-material calculation to produce the final image for example V-Ray, Corona, or a real-time engine. Rasterization A fast rendering method that converts 3D geometry directly into pixels without fully simulating the physics of light. It is the technique behind most real-time engines and video games. It is quick but less physically accurate than ray tracing, so it is favored where speed matters more than perfect realism.

Ray tracing A rendering method that simulates the path of individual light rays as they bounce around a scene, producing accurate reflections, refractions, and shadows. It is slower than rasterization but far more photorealistic, which is why it underpins most high-end still imagery.

Path tracing An advanced, physically-based form of ray tracing that traces many light paths per pixel to resolve extremely realistic lighting, soft shadows, and color bleeding. It is computationally heavy and typically reserved for the most demanding photoreal work.

Global illumination (GI) The simulation of indirect light, light that bounces off surfaces and illuminates other surfaces rather than only the light coming straight from a source. GI is what makes a rendered interior feel naturally lit instead of flat, because it captures how sunlight fills a room after reflecting off floors and walls.

PBR (physically based rendering) A materials workflow in which surfaces are defined by real-world physical properties roughness, reflectivity, metalness, so they respond to light believably under any lighting condition. PBR is why a well-made material looks correct whether the scene is set at noon or dusk.

HDRI (high dynamic range image) A 360° photograph that captures a full range of light intensities and is used to light a 3D scene realistically and to provide reflections. Dropping in a good HDRI is a common way to give a render natural sky lighting and true-to-life reflections in glass and metal.

Real-time rendering Rendering fast enough to display and navigate instantly, rather than waiting minutes or hours per frame. Real-time engines such as Lumion, Enscape, Twinmotion, and D5 have reshaped the industry by cutting iteration time from days to seconds, and they power interactive walkthroughs and configurators.

Post-production (post) The editing stage after a raw image leaves the render engine, where color, contrast, atmosphere, entourage (people, cars, vegetation), and final polish are added usually in Photoshop or a compositing tool. Good post is often the difference between a technically correct image and a compelling one.

2. Types of renderings & deliverables

Photomontage (photo composite) A rendering in which the 3D building is composited into a real photograph of its actual site, so viewers see the proposed design in its true, real-world context. It is a favorite for planning submissions because it shows exactly how a building will sit within an existing streetscape.

Floor plan rendering (2D & 3D) A visual, colored, furnished version of a floor plan that non-professionals can read at a glance far easier to interpret than a technical line drawing. 3D floor plans add depth and furniture to communicate how spaces flow.

Dollhouse view A 3D view that removes the roof and outer walls to show a full interior layout from above at an angle, the way you look down into a dollhouse. It reads faster than a 2D plan and shows how rooms relate to one another. It is built from the same model as the rest of the project.

Site plan (aerial site view) A view that places a development in its setting to communicate scale and context, often combining the 3D model with a drone photograph of the actual site. It matters most for larger projects, capital-raising materials, and approvals.

Section view (3D cutaway) A 3D view that slices through a building to reveal its interior structure and the relationship between floors. It suits brochures, investor materials, and clear technical communication.

Walkthrough vs flythrough Two forms of architectural animation. A walkthrough moves at human eye level through interior and ground-level spaces, the way a person would move through the building. A flythrough moves through the air, around and over the project, to show form, scale, and setting. Both are built from the project model and can carry music, pacing, and voiceover. Cutdown (social cut, vertical cut) A shorter or reformatted edit produced from a master animation for example a vertical version for social platforms or a brief teaser for a specific audience. Cutdowns come from the same master film, which is more efficient than commissioning separate videos.

3D virtual tour / 360° tour A navigable, interactive view of a space built from the same model as the rendering set and viewable on standard devices, including phones. Buyers can explore a property on their own terms, anytime and from anywhere. Configurator (interactive finish selection) An interactive tour in which a viewer switches between finish and material options flooring, cabinetry, countertops and watches the space update. The simple version is a set of pre-rendered variations; a fully real-time configurator that changes on the fly is a more advanced, per-project build. Either way it is built on accurate 3D of the actual design, not a generic template.

Virtual staging The low-cost practice of digitally dropping furniture onto a photograph of an empty room. It is photo editing, not 3D, so it cannot be re-angled or revised the way a model can. It is useful for quick listing photos, but when a space needs to be shown furnished, renovated, or repositioned with full flexibility, modeling and lighting it in real 3D produces a more accurate, reusable result.

Hero shot (hero image) The single most important image in a set, the one that carries the launch or the marketing campaign. The right hero is often not the obvious angle, and two strong images usually outperform four average ones, so choosing it is treated as part of the creative work.

Entourage The supporting elements added to populate a scene and give it life and scale: people, cars, trees, furniture, and props. Thoughtful entourage makes a space feel inhabited; poorly chosen entourage instantly signals a fake.

3. Process & production terms

Rendering brief The document that translates your design vision into clear, workable instructions for the 3D artist: views, mood, materials, deadlines, and reference. A strong brief is the single most effective way to get an accurate result with fewer revisions. See how to write a 3D rendering brief.

Moodboard (art direction) The stage where the visual direction is set before any modeling begins: lighting, time of day, materials, atmosphere, and reference images. Agreeing the look up front is how expensive corrections later in the process are avoided.

Massing The overall size, shape, and arrangement of a building’s volumes, before detail and materials are resolved. Massing is what planning and review authorities assess first, which is why approval-focused renderings represent it faithfully.

White-model preview (clay / grey model) A view of clean, untextured 3D geometry for each camera angle, with no color, material, or lighting applied. It is where camera framing, height, lens, and composition are approved while changes still cost almost nothing. The same change made after materials and lighting are applied costs a full revision round which is why the white model is approved first.

Revision round A defined opportunity to request changes to work in progress; the number included is confirmed in the proposal. A revision is a requested change – a different angle after approval, a material swap, a lighting adjustment. Correcting something done wrong against the brief is not a revision and is fixed as a matter of course. A change to the design itself, rather than to the rendering, is added scope and is flagged before work starts.

FFE (furniture, fixtures & equipment) The furnishings that dress a space: seating, tables, lighting, rugs, art, and appliances. In Standard work, FFE can be drawn from a curated asset library matched to the design; in Premium work, FFE is custom-modeled to spec. To reproduce a specific real product accurately, the artist needs the exact item name, model, and manufacturer or links and brochures.

Source files The original working files behind a model or rendering – a CAD file, a Revit model, or a 3D scene. They matter when a project builds on existing work: with the source files, existing geometry can sometimes be reused to save time; without them, a rendering cannot be edited and has to be rebuilt from scratch.

Production levels (Standard, Hybrid, Premium) The tiers work is scoped at. Standard is accurate and faithful to the design: library furniture where it serves, fair lighting, honest materials; the level seen on a developer’s listing or sales brochure. Premium is editorial: custom-modeled furniture, lighting used as a storytelling tool, atmosphere and lifestyle; the level seen in a design publication. Hybrid combines the two: Premium for hero shots, Standard for the supporting set. The level is decided at the moodboard stage.

4. Software & technical tools

3ds Max A long-standing industry-standard 3D modeling and rendering application from Autodesk, widely used in architecture for detailed scenes and high-end still imagery, usually paired with V-Ray or Corona.

V-Ray A leading photorealistic render engine (by Chaos) prized for the realism of its lighting and materials. It is a default choice for high-end architectural stills.

Corona Renderer A render engine (also by Chaos) known for producing beautiful, natural results with a relatively simple, artist-friendly workflow especially popular for interiors.

CAD (computer-aided design) Software (such as AutoCAD) used to create precise 2D drawings and 3D models. CAD files are common source files handed to a rendering studio at the start of a project.

BIM (building information modeling) A process built around intelligent 3D models that carry data about a building’s components, not just its geometry.

Render farm A cluster of networked computers that share the heavy computation of rendering high-resolution images or animation frames, dramatically cutting the time to produce a large set. Studios use in-house or cloud render farms to hit tight deadlines.

Documentary rendering Imagery built to show a design accurately: fair lighting, honest materials, and full visibility of the space. Its purpose is to get a design approved or communicated clearly, which is why it suits planning, review-board, and public-hearing submissions.

Editorial rendering Imagery built to sell. It uses dramatic light, atmosphere, and composition to create desire and suggest a lifestyle. A dramatic editorial image deliberately shows less of the design than a documentary one acceptable when the goal is to sell rather than to gain approval. Most projects need both editorial and documentary images across the set.

Planning / ARB submission (Architectural Review Board) A local body or process that reviews a proposed design against guidelines before construction is approved. Renderings prepared for this purpose are documentary rather than editorial faithful massing, honest materials, accurate context so reviewers see what will actually be built. Clear imagery that anticipates the board’s questions can reduce the back-and-forth that slows approvals.

Pre-sale / off-plan marketing Selling units before construction is complete, using renderings, animations, and tours as the primary sales assets because there is no finished building to show. High-quality visuals let buyers commit with confidence and help developers secure deposits early.

OM-quality (offering-memorandum quality) A level of polish suited to the documents institutional capital reviews – an offering memorandum or investor presentation. Imagery at this level is built to give investors and lenders confidence in what they are funding, so accuracy and a consistent, credible look matter as much as visual appeal.

Phasing (phased rollout) Delivering a set of visuals in stages rather than all at once, timed to how a launch unfolds for example a hero shot for a PR moment first, a fuller set for the sales push next, and interiors later. It suits larger, branded projects where different milestones need different images at different times.

Drone plate (photographic plate) A real photograph or aerial drone shot of the actual site, used as a real-world backdrop that the rendered building is composited into. For the plate and the render to line up, camera angle, lens, and lighting must match which is why a shot guideline is prepared for the photographer before the shoot.
